The brand-new School Readiness Programme you need to try now!

Do you have a little one about to enter big school? Like most parents, you might be a little concerned at just how ‘ready’ he or she is. Sure, they can open their own lunch box, carry their backpacks, and put on a school uniform, but does this make them ready?

As parents how can we help our children gain the confidence, the social skills and the academic edge to excel in school without sacrificing that precious play time? How can we make learning fun for our little ones without feeling like an alphabet drill sergeant? And how can we escape the guilt that possibly, we’re not doing enough to prepare our little ones for school?

Begin Bright has the answer!

Don’t keep yourself awake at night with these questions, Begin Bright has the answer for you!

Brand new to New Zealand, Australia’s leading School Readiness Programme is here to help little learners smoothly and confidently transition to school.

The Begin Bright School Readiness Programme uses fun, engaging STEAM classes to teach your child key literacy and numeracy skills, which supports them academically in their transition to primary school.

Phonological awareness, phonemics and phonics

A key component to the programs is our focus on phonological awareness, phonemics and phonics. This is important so children learning to read are able to make the link between sounds and letters. Begin Bright teaches synthetic phonics so that when a child arrives at the stage of decoding words, the words can be broken into small pieces (e.g., b-ea-ch).

This approach helps children to decode words that they cannot identify through context and appearance alone. Phonological awareness ability at school entry is considered to be one of the best predictors of a child’s reading success.

Different levels for different kids

Green level (for children aged 3 – 4)

Begin Bright kids begin to develop literacy and numeracy comprehension. This level introduces letter names and the sounds of the alphabet to give children a good phonemic knowledge of the English language. This level also explores numbers 1 to 10.

Yellow level (for children aged 4 -5)

Begin Bright kids recognise sound formations as letters, recognise sounds in words, and write words containing the sounds. The programme focuses on single sounds at the beginning, end, and middle of three-letter words (eg. c-a-t).

Children will also learn to recognise and write numbers 1 to 20 and learn to add single digit numbers.

Orange level (supports 5+ year old)

Once the Begin Bright children start school, the programme gives children a good foundation of reading principles. The programme goes through single sounds, blend sounds and then introduces children to sight words, punctuation, and writing.

Begin Bright

For Mathematics, Begin Bright also focuses on forming a solid foundation; children can connect the spelling of the number, the numeral, and quantities of numbers. We encourage fluency in counting sequences, adding and subtracting, and developing problem-solving skills.

These are the things that are focussed on in the first year of school. Knowing that your child has already been exposed to these skills means they will be more willing to participate, more confident to speak up, and more excited to learn what’s next.

It’s more than just learning

While Begin Bright is all about learning, it’s so much more. It’s about helping children gain the confidence, fine motor and social skills to start school. Kids are spending time with other kids, a qualified teacher and without mummy (just for the duration of the class), which, again, prepares them for big school.

The classes are short (one hour once a week) and small, which means more one-on-one teacher time. Plus, it gives you an hour to yourself to get the groceries done without having a child clinging to your leg.

It’s social, but structured. It’s fun, but learning-focused.

Begin Bright School Readiness Program

Children learn at different rates so Begin Bright helps children develop these learning skills, so that, no matter where they are academically, they have the confidence and the motivation to continue.

Regardless of whether your little one loves the idea of school, or, would prefer to sit in a sandpit all day, Begin Bright can give you the confidence that, yes, your child is ready. And yes, you’ve done enough.

As a teacher, I have not yet heard of this program but it is certainly something that interest me in future for our two young daughters and also for students of mine that may have delays or need extra support. I love reading and I am very passionate about early literacy.

I am not doubting that this would be a good thing for preschoolers to prepare for school readiness. But I thought this is something that you can get from attending Playcentre or Kindergarten as well. I tried looking for my post code and there’s isn’t one near our place. I guess this feels like a Kumon but for preschoolers.

This looks fantastic, it would have been great to have my little boy in a programme like this before he started school. It would be great if this expandended and was offered outside of Auckland too.

Actually would have loved to have done this before my son started school last year if I’d known about it. Sounds super great. My son has struggled with school ever since august last year and is finally getting the help he needs now with having a better teacher than last year. They feel he may have dyslexia hense why he’s alot slower learner and struggling hardout with his learning.

This actually sounds really good if I had preschoolers I would use it or if they had just started school since it says it has sight words, sounds, blending sounds and punctuation. My kids have always struggled with school but I did find the new entrant teacher great they have so much patience with little kids. I would diff instead recommend this to others with preschoolers to get them ready for school it’s a great idea.

Sadly no classes near me in Christchurch but what a great idea for mama’s who want to prepare their kiddiea but dont feel equipped or dont have the time to do it… my little ones have benefited alot from practicing different skills at home with me… i found that extra time and effort you put into doing these things with them makes a huge difference…i would definitely consider this program for my 3yr old…and would encourage other mums to do the same… it has long lasting effects.

This is a really great idea! Our daughter is 6 and in her second year, she was more than ready for school I think when she started. She could read the basics and had a grasp on counting etc and could write some words. Luckily she has done really well and is above average in her reading. My son (who is now 25) did have some trouble when he started school and this programme would have been fantastic for him 🙂

Oooooo this is like it was written for me and Mykah!! It’s been 7yrs since we’ve had a school starter and I feel completely out of practice, overwhelmed, time constrainted and more….this is a God send!! I will deff be signing Mykah up to help him get the very best start he can, it was the one mistake I made with my two older boys was never really getting them ready for school I figured because they could dress themselves, recognize their name when seen and count to five they were good…little did I realise the need for phonics and being able to count backwards etc …made for a busy time after school for first year or so , so something like this is just awesome to have as a tool. Super excited to give this a go with my boy.
