Why Kefir Yoghurt Is Full Of Goodies For Little Tums

Promotion for The Collective

Have you been hearing about how good kefir is for tummies but not sure what it’s all about? We take a look at kefir and why it’s so good for tiny tums.

Although it has been around for thousands of years in many places around the world, kefir has recently become more popular here in Aotearoa. But what is it and what makes it so good for us?

What is kefir?

Kefir (pronounced keh-fear) has been enjoyed around the world for over a thousand years. The name kefir comes from a Turkish word that can be roughly translated as long or good life and refers to both the kefir grains that are used to ferment milk, and the resulting product that is also called kefir.

The origin of the kefir grains is fascinating. Although there is some evidence that they were used 4000 years ago in China, their use is traced more recently (just a few thousand years ago) to an area in northern Russia where they were used to ferment milk in order to be able to store it safely. Kefir grains are 100% natural and no one has ever been able to recreate their “magic” artificially.

Why is kefir yoghurt so good for little tums?

The kefir grains contain billions of micro-organisms or live cultures and when used to ferment milk it creates a yoghurt-like product. But what sets kefir apart is the number of powerful probiotics it contains, some of which are believed to protect against infection by inhibiting the growth of harmful bacteria in tummies.

In addition to this probiotic goodness, kefir is also a good source of protein, calcium, potassium, phosphorous, vitamin A, and some B vitamins, so it’s also good for the owners of the little tums!
