The Nanny Consultants Guide Birth to 2 Years

Alana Porstmouth started nannying at the age of 18, after babysitting since she was 14 years old. Alana worked as a professional nanny for 11 years, looking after kids from newborns through to teenagers. She also worked as a live-in nanny and has experience looking after young children overnight on a regular basis. Over the years, Alana has found strategies that have worked for many different children, with varying temperaments, personalities and family dynamics.

Alana was inspired to write a book to help families by making their lives easier and more enjoyable with their children; by making the challenging times a bit easier; and by having some strategies to help with different situations. Watching a family’s success lights up her heart!

Alana is currently writing the second book for parents of children from 2-5 years old.

“This book is designed to give parents/caregivers an easy straight forward approach to parenting using strategies that have been used, tested and proven to work. Where we have suggested strategies we have given a few options, ensuring there is a strategy that works for everyone.” The Nanny Consultants Guide Birth to 2 Years

Our review

The Nanny Consultants Guide Birth to 2 Years covers some of the most important time in a child’s life. Connections, experiences and learning during these formative years are widely considered to be the foundation for the rest of a person’s life.

The conversational style of this book makes it easy to digest. Some of the suggestions may not fit with your personal philosophy but it would take quite a gigantic tome to cover all suggested practices for parenting! Where suitable, the book shares alternative strategies, allowing parents to establish their own parenting style. The handy notes pages after each section allow for personal thoughts and observations to be recorded.

Essential advice is reiterated when needed in relevant sections so you don’t need to hunt through the entire book for advice when you need it, ie when you need a sleep technique for the baby who suddenly has forgotten that they need to sleep now and then!

Great tips include examples of day-to-day routines, using a diary and reading baby’s cues, and the respect shown between parent and child through communication and understanding is refreshing. There are useful management strategies for behavioural issues including tantrums, sharing, unacceptable behaviour and safety. Again, the respectful treatment of the child is paramount throughout the advice.

Other helpful sections include toys and activities that are suitable for different ages, home and water safety advice, plus the ins and outs of different childcare options. A comprehensive health section includes teething tips and allergy advice. There is also advice on foster care and adoption. Information on carseats is comprehensive and clearly laid out, covering such oddities for non-parents such as tether points and isofix references along with expiry date intracacies! The guide does not cover breastfeeding in detail, acknowledging that any issues are best referred to a lactation consultant or Plunket nurse.

The book we reviewed was a first draft and Alana is keen to improve the book’s readability.

Knowing what to tell your children about parenting and realising the change from my time and the trying not to interfere. It might be easier to leave it to a present like a helpful book. Love to pass this precious treasure on.
