Pokémon Litwick Cake

Kym Moore
Create a Litwick birthday cake for your Pokémon fan. Litwick is in the shape of a candle, where the Pokemon’s hair is melting wax.

Ingredients

Each cake layer I made used the following, so you’ll need to multiple by three:

  • 1.5 cups flour
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 1/3 cup cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon white vinegar
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 cup water

For the buttercream icing I made two shades of purple, so you’ll need to multiple by two:

  • 225 grams softened butter
  • 4 cups icing sugar
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons milk
  • Purple food colouring Use slightly more dye in one set of the icing to get the two different Litwick shades

For the decorations:

  • Black writing icing
  • Purple sugar I used white sugar and shook it in a snack container with some food gel to get the right colour
  • 1 Orange jelly bean
  • 8 Purple candles

Instructions

  • Mix up the cake batter in a large bowl and pour into a greased and lined round cake tin. My cake tin is a 12 inch one. Bake each cake layer at 180 degrees for approximately 40 minutes. I always watch the cake and wait for it to smell yummy before checking it with a cake skewer. If it’s baked through that is good enough for me. Once the cake is baked, rest in the tin for about 5 minutes and then move it out to a wire rack to completely cool.
Once all three cakes are cool, you can level them so they are nice and flat for assembly. I have a cake leveller but you can use a sharp knife if you have a steady hand. The next step is to assemble the layers, adding buttercream between each layer. Once the three layers are sandwiched with icing, apply buttercream to the outside. The cake needs to be fully coated with the darker shade of purple icing.  When you apply the ‘hair’ this is the lighter icing, and this can be applied with a knife, to get the long fringe piece looking right.
You need to leave a circle indent on the top of the cake to sprinkle the coloured sugar. I piped around mine, so it would hold the sugar better.  The final things to do are add a jellybean eye, write on a smile with black writing icing and add that sugar and your purple candles. I also piped some more icing around the bottom of the cake to tidy up.
