Picture it now: you’re sitting at home, notebook in hand. And with the click of a few buttons or a simple phone call, you can create the perfect family holiday itinerary, with exciting adventures, fabulous accommodations and delicious food stops. It’s a picture-perfect scene where you have endless possibilities at your fingertips. But if you’re feeling more nerves than butterflies of excitement, you might be surprised to know that you’re not alone.

At home, we’ve likely become accustomed to our family’s unique routines. Getting up at a certain time, a rotation of family favourite meals, activities, school and work. While it may seem ordinary, many of us really are creatures of habit and comfort.

A family vacation, while exciting, is a big change and disruption to the routines we’ve grown used to. As parents, we hope that our children will adjust rather than presenting us with public meltdowns or fussy tantrums. On top of that, we hope that we don’t face disruptions or difficulties while away that make it all harder.

So, if amongst all the excitement and adventure that awaits, you’re sat wondering, “Is this nervousness normal?”

The answer is absolutely, and we’re here to tell you that’s totally fine!

Why am I so nervous?

While there is welcome anticipation and looking forward to the adventure that awaits your family, sometimes as parents, we can get caught up in worrying about the journey to get to our holiday destination.

  1. What if there’s a delay?
  1. What if our flight is cancelled?
  1. How will I keep track of all our luggage?
  1. What if one of us gets sick while away?

Don’t beat yourself up if these questions seem to be at the forefront of your mind; it’s natural for us as parents to want to be as prepared as possible.

What if something happens to our luggage?

Lost, delayed, or damaged luggage is one of those holiday hassles nobody wants to think about. Especially when you’re travelling with kids and have extra gear like strollers and car seats to consider.

A few simple ways to be prepared:

  1. Keep essentials close: Pack medications, important documents, valuables and a change of clothes in your carry-on, just in case your checked luggage is delayed. Don’t forget to pack a change of clothes in your child’s carry-on bag too.
  1. Make your bags easy to identify: A distinctive luggage tag, colourful strap or unique suitcase can make bags easier to spot and help prevent mix-ups.
  1. Know what to do if something goes wrong: If your luggage or family travel gear is delayed, damaged or missing, report it to the airline or baggage service desk as soon as possible and keep your baggage claim details and receipts.

Travel insurance can also help you if the unexpected happens, with cover available for delayed or lost luggage and personal belongings, so you’re not left facing the full cost of replacing essential items.

What if there’s an issue with my flight?

Worried about delays or missing flights? Travel insurance can also help you manage unexpected travel disruptions, reducing the impact on your family and your pockets.

A few simple ways to be prepared:

  1. Check in with the airline: Whether you call or speak with an agent at the kiosk, staff can help with issues related to delays, cancellations, or missed flights.
  1. Check the cause: In some cases, flight delays or cancellations are simply out of anyone’s control when it comes to ensuring passenger safety. Sometimes flight problems can be a direct issue with the airline itself. In both circumstances, each airline will have a unique policy that will determine what care and compensation you’re entitled to.
  1. Keep your receipts: Keep a copy of your tickets, along with any money spent on food, transport, or accommodation while waiting. In some cases, you may be able to file claims with the airline or your travel insurance for reimbursement.

What happens if I get sick while away?

There’s no sense in denying it; the cost of seeking healthcare overseas can be a tremendous financial expense. In countries such as the United States, a single emergency room visit can cost between NZ$2,500 and NZ$5,000, before tests or additional treatment are added. A small investment in travel insurance before your journey can potentially save you thousands and give you confidence before you travel. Comprehensive travel insurance cover that includes a benefit for overseas medical expenses means treatment decisions for your family can be based on getting the medical care required knowing you have support available and the appropriate cover in place.

A few simple ways to be prepared:

  1. Research: Look into local conditions in the place you are visiting, and prepare before your trip to ensure you maintain optimal health while away. Keep in mind water quality, sanitation, hygiene, temperatures, access to prescription medication, and vaccination requirements.
  1. Have your medications ready: Refill those prescriptions if you need to and be ready to declare prescription medications at customs with appropriate packaging and paperwork.
  1. Keep essentials on hand: Items like sunscreen, painkillers, insect repellent, and plasters are great to keep on your person while travelling.
  1. Call your travel insurance company: In the event of injury or serious illness, contact your travel insurance provider as soon as possible to confirm your cover, manage your care and/or coordinate payments/medical expenses.
