Make a paper mache horse pencil holder

Kids will love making this easy paper mache horse pencil holder that will look great sitting on their desk.

What you need:

• Pencil
• White paper
• Scissors
• Cardboard
• Paddle pop stick
• Paper mache glue
• Strips of newspaper
• Empty soup can
• Black marker
• Paint

Activity:

Draw a horse’s neck and head, four legs and tail onto a piece of thick cardboard. Cut out the pieces.

Reinforce the neck piece by taping or gluing the paddle pop stick to the back to make it stronger.

Cut your newspaper into strips and dip them into the paper-mache glue.

Apply two layers of the paper mache (the glue-soaked newspaper strips) to the soup can and to each of the horse parts. Let dry overnight.

Once dry, securely attach each of the horse parts to the can using tape or glue.

Place the neck and head piece at the top of the can and two legs on each side. You choose where to attach the tail.

With the horse parts attached to the can, apply another layer of paper mache to the horse and the soup can so that the can look like the horse’s body and the cardboard pieces act as the ‘bones’ of the project. Let dry.

Paint your horse cup whatever colours you want and let dry.

Draw the horses eyes and nose and any other markings with black marker and you’re done!
