Salt playdough recipe

Salt play dough dries harder and can be baked to make models that will last. Kids can get very creative and spend lots of time having fun with this recipe knowing their creations are there to keep!

Ingredients

  • 3 cups flour

  • 1 cup table salt

  • 310ml water

    1 1/4 cups

  • 1 tbsp glycerine

Equipment

  • 1 Mixing bowl
  • 1 Baking tray
  • 1 Foil or baking paper
  • 1 Oven
  • 1 Cookie cutters (optional)
  • 1 Paint brushes
  • 1 Poster paints
  • 1 Varnish

Instructions

  1. Mix all ingredients together and knead until the dough is elastic.
  2. Pre-heat oven to 150°C conventional or 130°C fan-forced.
  3. Line baking tray with foil or baking paper and lay play dough shapes on it.
  4. Bake the shapes. Thin objects will take about 1 1/2 hours to bake with thicker models taking longer. If the object is beginning to brown, turn down the oven temperature.
  5. Once the play dough has cooled, paint them with poster paints and add a final coat of varnish.

Notes

Tip
Knead the dough on a plastic board to avoid staining wooden surfaces if using food coloring.

Use a straw to make holes for hanging decorations before baking.

Storage
Once varnished, the salt dough creations can be kept indefinitely in a dry environment.
