Hockey

Age to start:

Hockey in New Zealand is organised through 32 regional associations that cover several local centres with which clubs affiliate. Many associations run an introductory programme, Small Sticks, for children as well as a competition grade for school teams. Representative teams are selected from Under 11 upwards.

Rules of the game:

The basic rules of hockey are:

  • The game is played on a rectangular ‘turf’
  •  A game is played for (up to) 70 minutes between two teams each consisting of eleven players
  •  Players ‘dribble’ the ball with ’hooked’ sticks to move it down towards the goal net
  •  The aim of the game is to score a goal by hitting the ball into the goal that is guarded by the opposing team’s goal keeper
  •  The team that has scored the most goals at the end of the game is the victor.
