Get the kids painting and create your own colourful tic tac toe game with this easy DIY project.
We asked Kidspot reader Sarah and her two boys to create the project. Follow the instructions, and watch the video below, on how to make your own tic tac toe game.
You will need:
- 10 medium-sized, smooth rocks – we used 2 Pouring Art Rock Sets from KMart
- Wood slice – we used a Wooden Stepping Disc from KMart. If using a slice from a tree trunk, ensure that it’s clean and dry and free of splinters
- Resene testpots in various colours – we used: Tree Frog, Turbo Fizz, Patterns Blue, Bright Red, Christalle Clowning Around, Paua, Crusoe, Wet n Wild, Tangerine Traffic Light and Endeavour
- Black paint – we used Resene Charcoal
- Paintbrushes

Step-by-step instructions to make the tic tac toe game
Step 1
Wipe the rocks with a soft cloth to remove any dust/dirt – ensure rocks are dry before painting. Lay down some newspaper or a splash mat in your painting area. Give the testpots a shake before opening.
Step 2
Choose your paint colours. Either paint the rocks a different colour for each player or paint them whatever colours you like (just don’t use black or very dark colours).
Step 3
Paint a base coat on each of the rocks, one side at a time, allowing them to dry between sides. Be sure to wash your brush between colours. Apply a second coat to the rocks.
Step 4
Once the paint is dry, use a thin brush to paint an ‘X’ on 5 rocks and an ‘O’ on five rocks in black.
Step 5
On the wood slice, use black paint to paint the lines of the tic tac toe board, as pictured. You can use a straight piece of cardboard to help you get a good straight line. Allow the paint to dry between doing the vertical and horizontal lines.
Step 6
Leave everything to dry then play! One person is X’s and the other O’s. Each person takes turns at placing one of their rocks with the X or O face-side up in one of the nine squares on the board. The object of the game is to create a line of three of your symbols either horizontal, vertical or diagonally.
