Age to start:

Children can start athletics from around 5 years old. Children generally start with running (short distance), long jump, discus and shotput. As they get older longer running races are introduced as are other discplines including High Jump.

Rules of the game:

Due to the various events and disciplines of athletics, various rules govern each event. Children will be educated about the rules and regulations of varying events.


Athletics for children places a strong emphasis on fun and fitness. Children of all levels of skill and fitness can join. A strong emphasis is placed on the children achieving their personal bests.

Sign up dates:

Athletics are held during Term 4 and Term 1. Many clubs also run Harriers during the winter months.

To successfully participate in Athletics you require;

  • An enthusiastic attitude
  • Determination
  • Physical fitness or a willingness to improve physical fitness
  • Self-motivation and a desire to achieve your personal best
