How to lace shoes: over under

Learning to tie shoelaces is an important developmental milestone for kids, but did you know there are more than 30 different ways of lacing shoes?

Try this standard over under method for starters.

What you need:

  • 1 x pair of lace up shoes with at least four pairs of eyelets

Watch the how-to video to find out how to lace up your shoes in the over under style.

Over Under

This method reduces friction and makes the laces easier to tighten and loosen. It also reduces wear and tear on your laces.

For even numbers of eyelet pairs, you need to begin straight across on the outside and in through the bottom eyelet pairs.

For odd numbers of eyelet pairs, you need to begin straight across from the inside to the outside of the eyelet pairs.

At each eyelet pair, alternate between crossing OVER (on the outside) and in through the next higher set of eyelets or crossing UNDER (on the inside) and out through the next higher set of eyelets.

Repeat until lacing is completed.
