What you need

  • Ceramic mugs, plates & tiles. White seems to give the best result.
  • Ceramic paint/pen. Available from craft stores and Spotlight.
  • Paint brushes. Different thicknesses give different results.

How to do it

  • Read instructions on label of paint or pen first!
  • Wash and thoroughly dry your mug, plate or tile.
  • You may want to do a rough sketch/plan of your design on a piece of paper.
  • Create your masterpiece.
  • Allow to dry for recommended time (usually 24 hours).
  • “Cook” in oven as per instructions on label.

Hint

  • If you make a mistake with your design, it can be washed off any time before you “cook” it. Wipe “mistake” off with a damp cloth. Allow to dry before repainting.
  • Painted mugs can be used as a gift – filled with nuts/lollies/sewing items, small tools & nails, seed packets etc and wrapped in cellophane.
  • Painted plates could be used as place setting indicators.
  • Painted tiles can be hung on doors and walls inside or on fences and gates outside to spread the festive cheer!
  • Plates might be easier for small children to work with.
  • You can buy white mugs and plates from many “$2 type” shops or search the local op shop!
  • In this craft, “less is best”. The paint will dry more evenly and is less inclined to “run” – especially on mugs – when used thinly.
