Magnetic attraction experiment

What you need:

  • modelling clay
  • sharp pencil with an eraser
  • horseshoe magnet

Number of players:
1+

Activity:

Roll the modelling clay into a fist-sized ball.

Flatten it to make a cone shape.

Push the eraser end of the pencil into the clay so it stands upright.

Balance the horseshoe magnet on the pencil lead.

The magnet will slowly move itself in a north-south direction.

Why?

The earth has a magnetic field which attracts your magnet.
