Spoon reflection experiment

Spoon reflection experiment

Spoons are not only fun for eating ice cream, they can also teach kids a lot about science! This spoon reflection experiment is a great way to teach kids about mirrors and all you need is in the cutlery drawer. So grab a spoon, shine it up and have fun with this great kids science experiment.

What you need:

  • Clean spoon

Number of players:
1+

Activity:

Hold your spoon up and look at your reflection on the inside of the spoon. Does your reflection look bigger than normal?

This is because the inside of a spoon is concave.

Concave mirrors make images look larger. This is how dentists see your teeth as concave mirrors enlarge the reflection of your teeth.

Now turn your spoon over and look at your reflection again on the back of the spoon.

The outside of a spoon is convex and makes things look farther away.

You can experiment seeing how you look using shiny metal mixing bowls and magnifying mirrors too.
