Easy costume: Madeline

This easy Book Week costume idea is based on the Madeline series of books by Ludwig Bemelmans.  A navy dress and big yellow hat are the key to this simple dress up costume for little girls.

What you need:

• 1 x big straw sun hat or similar
• 1 x navy dress
• 1 x A4 sheet of white felt
• double-sided sticky tape
• 1 x 50cm piece of red ribbon
• yellow paint

Paint the sun hat yellow. Just use normal water-based paints and a paint brush.

Now add a Peter Pan collar to the navy blue dress. Trace the collar shape onto a piece of white felt and cut it out. Now stick it to the collar on the dress (or the neckline if the dress has no collar) using the double-sided sticky tape.

Tie the red ribbon around the neck.

Add white socks and buckle-up school shoes if you have them.

Madeline is ready to "walk in two straight lines …" with the other little girls.
