Potato stamps

Potato stamps

You don’t need to buy art sets – your home is loaded with materials your kids can use to create art with. Let the kids raid the cupboard for old potatoes or apples that can be turned into homemade stamps.

What you need:

  • 2 or 3 medium potatoes
  • sharp knife for carving
  • paper
  • paint
  • dish
  • sponge
  • newspaper

Number of players:
1+

Activity:

Cut the potatoes in half.

Using a knife carve simple shapes into the flat side of the potato halves.

Cover your child’s work bench with newspaper.

Put some paint in the dish and wet the sponge with paint.

To stamp, press the potato stamp onto the painted side of the sponge like you would press a stamp onto an inkpad.

Once inked up, firmly press the potato stamp to paper.

Repeat process.

You can use the paintings as wrapping paper, or before beginning fold the paper into cards that can be decorated.

When painting make sure you have an apron for your child.
