Q&A with Nechelle Turner
To understand more and to grab some essential tips, we caught up with Nechelle Turner, Global Makeup Artist and Educator for Jane Iredale, at a recent photoshoot.
Meet Nechelle
Nechelle boasts over 25 years of experience in the beauty industry, starting her journey as a makeup artist for several major cosmetic brands. Her talent has been showcased on the red carpets of the Grammys and BET Awards!
In 2014, Nechelle joined Jane Iredale, driven by her passion for skincare and makeup. During her tenure, she played a key role in Product Development, contributing to shade extensions. Today, she serves as the Global Makeup Artist and Educator.
Q: What is your role with jane iredale and what attracted you to the brand?
A: I am the Global Makeup Artist and Educator. I have always been passionate about skincare, so when a friend introduced me to the products I was hooked and knew I wanted to work with the brand full-time. The fact that Jane Iredale is the perfect fusion between high-performance makeup and skincare was a win-win for me.
Q: What are your favourite Jane Iredale products that you always have to hand?
A: PurePressed Base, PureBronze Shimmer Bronzer in Copper Dusk and loving the new Lash Fixation Length & Definition Tubing Mascara.

Q: We’ve heard the term “clean beauty” a lot lately. How is this different to using “natural” products?
A: Clean Beauty refers to products formulated without toxic chemicals that can be damaging to health and the environment, versus natural products that are made from ingredients found in nature, and typically are plant-based.
Q: New Zealand is one of the first countries in the world to prohibit the use of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) – often described as ‘forever chemicals’ – in cosmetic products. What is the stance of Jane Iredale on ‘forever chemicals’?
A: Our products are completely free of parabens/PFAS’s that can be considered forever chemicals; instead we have found a way to utilise many ingredients found in nature to preserve our products, rather than nasty chemicals.

Q: Kids often get into their mum’s makeup bag with messy results! Is it safe for children to handle makeup?
A: Because our products are free of harmful toxins, they are perfectly safe if a little one gets their hands on them by accident, although we always recommend you keep your makeup and skincare products out of reach of little hands!
Q: How can I keep my makeup in place and looking fresh all day?
A: Work in layers when applying your makeup. A good makeup application always begins with a primer for adherence and longevity for the rest of your products. Our Smooth Affair Primer evens out skin tone and texture, to ensure a smooth canvas. The next step would be your Foundation of choice, then finishing up with one of our fantastic Hydration Sprays that gives our minerals extra staying power. Jane Iredale has a simple 3-step system – the Skincare Makeup System – to make it really easy – Primer, Foundation, and Hydration.
Q: Which new Jane Iredale products are you most excited about?
A: The recently launched ColorLuxe Eye Shadow Sticks are phenomenal!! They’re an easy long-wear product that can be used to create multiple looks. Their simplicity allows everyone to channel their inner makeup artist.
Check out Nechelle’s superb 5-minute make-up routine for when life is too busy!
