Skill Samurai review from Kyle and Jacque

    Skill Samurai

I was lucky to go try out the maths and coding class at Skill Samurai in Botany.

Skill Samurai offer after-school Singapore maths, coding, 3D printing, app development classes for kids, plus school holiday programs.

My mum took me for the assessment the Friday before we started the classes. This was just so they could see what level I am on in maths so my lessons would be helpful for me.

I got to choose a seat and had a laptop that I could work on. They gave me paper and a pen in case I needed to work out any of the problems. There were maths questions that popped up and I would have to work them out. Some were word problems, others were just basic addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. It would let you know if you got it wrong or right. Some of the questions were very easy and simple – a few were quite challenging.

    Assessment

While Kyle was doing the assessment, it was only him so we were allowed to sit upstairs and everything was explained to us step by step on what to expect, what they do and why. I loved how they went into detail and explained everything. Also, they gave us a booklet explaining all the information with a nice detailed page of references that we can look into more at home.

Before the assessment we got information to sign up to their platform for the booking of classes. I loved this, as it sends out a reminder email as well, and it is so well put together that you can choose, cancel, or add any classes you need.

    Thinking outside the box

The maths classes work on a gradually increasing difficulty, allowing kids to grow in confidence and ability at their own pace. They get them to think outside the box and build the foundation of maths so no matter what they come across, they will be able to work it out with no problems. They concentrate on strengthening the areas they need help in most so they can understand the area before moving on.

    Learn to code

The coding classes focus on problem-solving and computational thinking. This helps with maths skills and makes maths more fun.

Once kids have reached the level they need to be at in their grade, then they start them up on the next year’s level so that they’re ahead of their peer group. They do assessments regularly so that they remain on track for success.

    Test results

After Kyle finished the test I was shown his results and then they gave me the form with his results. They said based on this they can see where his strength is and where he needs work. In school he is a level or two ahead of his grade but as I was told at the assessment, school maths is behind compared to what they offer, so he would be on normal level actually for a year 5. I was told that they would start him on lessons for what he is lower graded for, then focus on his strength so he can be an all-rounder.

    Maths class

After I finished the test I was allowed to look around and my younger brother and I were rewarded with a sticker and a lolly. (It was nice that Mum was asked if we were allowed before we got offered lollies).

My first class was maths class. Mum signed me in (parents needed to sign in with a time and parent signature at the entrance) and then I went upstairs to class. Before class, if you are early enough, you get to play a bit of Pass the Dragon (a 3D-printed dragon they made) with the coach. Then we did the class. The maths class was easier than the assessment – obviously it is on my level now. It was really cool!! The questions are asked in a game-like format, so you have to answer questions before balloons fall. You get three chances if you get the answer wrong. After class you do some games.

You get your own folder where you write what you liked the most that day, what you didn’t like, and what you learnt. I liked that part. It was explained to Mum that they have these folders for us kids to give feedback and help shape the format and classes.

After class we got a sticker and lolly … these were awesome!

    Coding class

Coding class day we got instructions on how to work the program and then you make a character move. It was very much like Scratch pad but in a different program. You had to use the buttons and enter code in to make the character move in the direction you needed it to. I found this to be awesome!!! It gave me a chance to practice some logical thinking and problem-solving. (It is similar to the robotic coding they had at MOTAT).

After the coding class, we did a Kahoot about planets and space! I came first with only 10 points more than the seconnd person! That was awesome! I like things like that.

    Kyle’s feedback

I told my parents I really want to go back. I like the maths and coding and so want to do them both. I would also like to try the 3D-printing – that looks like a lot of fun as well.

    Final words from Jacque

I honestly feel the price is worth it for what they are offering the kids – they are currently offer a free trial class. Kyle has really expressed his interest in classes for the future.

Honestly, I would recommend them, they are really friendly and helpful and really make you feel like you belong there. The program they offer really does look incredible and fun for the kids. I’m sure that even after a few lessons, that kids’ levels of maths, problem-solving, logic and coding skills will put them ahead of their peer group and almost certainly guarantee them a brighter future.
