How to make your own pretty quilt cover

Getting kids involved and making decisions that affect them, even if it’s as simple as their bedroom décor, is an important step in child development. Even better, why not spend quality time with them by getting them to help make their own quilt cover? This one is easy to make

What you need:

• 12 x assorted cotton print fabric, minimum size: 40 x 80cm
• fabric piece 17 x 142cm
• single sheet for back
• sewing machine
• cutting mat
• rotary cutter
• quilting ruler (not essential but helpful)
• iron
• general sewing supplies
• 3 buttons

Step 2. Lay out your triangles as pictured to form a chevron pattern. Make sure you mix and match your patterns so they strongly contrast. It may take a little while of mixing and matching to get the balance right. Two triangles will form one quilt block.

Step 3. To make a quilt block, match diagonal edges right sides of fabric facing and sew a seam along the diagonal edge using a 1cm seam allowance. Zig zag raw edge to prevent fraying during the washing process.

Step 4. Open and iron. Clip the corners square and you have a completed block. It should now measure 37 x 37cm. Continue until all of your blocks have been made.

Step 5. Sew blocks together into rows, then, sew rows together taking care to match corners as best you can. All seams are 1cm allowance with zig zag over raw edge. Do the zig zag as you go. Each finished block should now measure 35 x 35cm, with the overall size of the duvet being 142 x 212cm. This includes a 1cm seam allowance around all sides.

Step 6. Hem the 17x142cm fabric piece along one of the long sides. Sew the other long side to the bottom of the patchwork cover, right sides facing. This will be the fold over at the bottom to stop your duvet slipping out. (See separate image for this next bit).On the bottom panel, fold the added fabric over twice where indicated on dotted line in diagram then hem forming the flap to prevent the duvet slipping out.

Step 7. Pin the bottom and top together around edges with right sides facing each other, then stitch. Turn inside out, and mark the places for 3 evenly spaced buttons and button holes at the opening. Create button holes on back side (bottom) of cover and sew buttons on front (top) of cover.
