Make a ringing telephone
Children mimic real life all the time. How many times have you seen your child chatting to a pretend friend on the pretend phone? Replace both of the pretends in there with real play things. Make a phone or two and play chat with your little one.
What you need:
- small box (i.e a recycled panadol or band aid box)
- paint
- paint brush
- coloured paper
- glue
- scissors
- straw
- tablespoon of lentils or rice
- tape
Number of players:
1+
Activity:
To the box, add one tablespoon of rice.
Tape the openings of the box firmly in place so that the rice remains inside the box.
When your child shakes the phone, the rice will move inside the box to create a ringing sound.
Choose your favourite phone colour and paint the box.
Set aside to dry.
Draw small numbers on coloured paper.
Cut them out and stick them onto the front face of the newly painted box.
From another piece of coloured paper cut out two small ovals and glue them on. These will be the speaker and microphone features of the phone.
Tape a straw to the side of the phone, this will be the antenna for the phone.
Notes:
- Use buttons as the telephone buttons for a three dimensional design.
- Numbers might not be an important feature on your telephone, it may be enough to cut out coloured shapes for the telephone buttons.
- Instead of cutting out ovals, stick on cotton balls to create the speaker and microphone features of the phone.
- Make a second phone and role play with your child.
