Maths in the kitchen: Making 2D play dough shapes

Shapes are all around us, from the most basic to the more complex. Read our printable worksheet, have a look about the kitchen and see what you could use to convert those shapes in the kitchen into tasty mathmatical fun!

What you need:

• salt play dough recipe
• dough cutters or plastic knives
• computer with internet access
• printer
• paper

Step 1. Create the salt play dough with the kids, getting them to measure the ingredients.

Step 2. When you have a big ball of dough, get the kids to divide it up by half or into quarters, depending on how many children are taking part in the fun.

Step 3. Time to break out the dough cutters and plastic knives! Print our worksheet, discuss the shapes around the room then recreate them with the play dough.

Notes: 

• Once the shapes have been created and baked, paint them up and pop them into an airtight container for future play.
• Why not make letters too? Create names or make the whole alphabet!
