Growing a herb garden is an easy way to teach kids about how plants grow. They will also love being able to pick the leaves that can then be used to add flavour to meals.

What you need:

  • Soil
  • Water
  • Seeds (such as parsley, mint, chives, basil)
  • Pot, trough or window box

Number of players:

Activity:

You can plant herbs in pots, troughs, tubs or window boxes.

Once you have decided where to plant your herbs, sprinkle the seeds into some soil and then cover with more soil.

Water the soil regularly and watch your herbs grow.

Notes:

  • Herbs, like vegetables, need plenty of sun to thrive so make sure you choose a sunny spot for sowing your seeds.
  • Make sure that the soil you use is good quality – poor soil will just lead to disappointment when sad, straggly seedlings pop up – if they pop up at all! If in doubt, buy a bag of soil.
