Make your own planter

Make your own planter

Gardening is a great activity in itself but planting in the garden is not the only option. Make a planter with the kids so they can plant herbs, veggies or colourful flowers in it all year round. Personalise it and give it as a gift or keep it for yourself to pretty up the garden.

What you need:

  • 10 litres peat moss
  • 5kg cement
  • 5kg coarse sand
  • wheelbarrow
  • water to mix
  • gloves
  • large styrofoam box or plastic mould container
  • dowel or stick

Number of players:
1+

Activity:

Put peat moss, cement and coarse sand into the wheelbarrow.

Add a small amount of water at a time and only enough to make a paste-like substance. Do not overwater.

Wearing gloves, push the paste mixture into your chosen moulds, paying careful attention to the corners.

Press it down to get an even edge.

Using your dowel or stick, make holes in the base of the pot for drainage.

Leave to set undercover for up to two weeks. Drying time is dependent on weather.

Take pot out of mould by either turning it upside down on a soft surface or ripping the foam off the pot.

Notes:

  • You can add stones, gemstones or other embellishments to the pot edging before it dries to personalise your pot.
