When you just can’t choose a theme, you can’t go past colour – and lots of it! Turn the cheeriness of colour into a party with a rainbow theme.
Rainbow party theme invitations
Have the birthday child colour in, or draw, a bunch of rainbows on a piece of white cardboard cut into a postcard size. Mail the invitations off with the party details written on the back.
Rainbow party theme costume ideas
Ask the children to come dressed head-to-toe in their favourite colour. Or, provide ribbons in each colour of the rainbow for kids to wear.
Rainbow party theme decorations
Whatever you do with decorations, make it super colourful.
- Make a balloon banner: buy link-together balloons in bright colours and make into an arch.
- Make rainbow mobiles: Cut coloured cardboard into strips of about 2cm wide and in various lengths. Then line up different sizes and different colours (ie, a short red above a long pink above a medium green etc) and sew together and hang from trees, or the ceiling over the table, for moveable colour.
- Hang a sea of streamers from a tree branch as a focal point – buy streamers in every colour and tie on branches for a floating feature. The kids will love running through them and they’re great as a backdrop for photos.
- Sort all the lollies by colour rather than lolly type. In clear glass lolly jars, or vases, place red M&Ms, skittles, snakes, raspberries etc.
- Make a rainbow cake and use as a table centrepiece. You could even try making this rainbow jelly too.
- Use coloured cardboard to cut out huge arches and stick a rainbow on the wall. At each end place a pot, or a bowl, filled with gold chocolate coins – the kids can take some home as party favours at the end of the day.
Rainbow party activities and birthday party games
- Have the children make a rainbow – fill a wide-mouthed glass jar with water and place a small mirror inside it on an angle mirror-side up. Turn off the lights then aim a flashlight towards the mirror in the jar and keep changing the angle of light or the mirror until you can see the rainbow on the wall or ceiling.
- Do any arts and crafts that involve colour – playdough, collages, painting and chalk drawings will all work to add colour and creativity.
- Make mini colour mixers – give each child a cardboard roll with little slits cut into the top. Cut up coloured cellophane into small rectangles and have each child slip different colours into the slits on their rolls and look through to the light to see the colours change as they insert more colours.

- Make colourful, edible jewellery: thread Fruit Loops onto a piece of string and tie the ends together to make a necklace or bracelet.

I literally just had this theme for our 1 year old’s birthday last weekend! Love the theme and the ideas, pity I didn’t see it any sooner but there are some great ideas here for other people to take away for sure 🙂
