Te Awa River Ride
This scenic and family-friendly cycling trail between Ngāruawāhia and Karapiro, weaves through rural and urban landscapes, taking in waterfalls and historic Māori sites as well as trendy shops and cafes. Take in the stunning Waikato River from the wide, smooth and largely flat trail, making Te Awa suitable for cyclists of all fitness and experience levels. Bike hire is available from River Riders and Riverside Adventures.
Hauraki Rail Trail
The Hauraki Rail Trail provides scenic and easy cycling suitable for all ages. From the Shorebird Coast town of Kaiaua on the Firth of Thames, this trail follows historic railway lines through Thames, Waihi, Te Aroha, and Matamata through beautiful scenery. Bike hire and shuttle services can be arranged.

Bridal Veil Falls
15-minute drive from Raglan
Walk to falls: 20-minute return
Also known as the Wairēinga Falls, this is an easy walk through native bush to viewing platforms that provide stunning views of the 55-metre falls. This walk is not stroller-friendly.
Taitua Arboretum
15-minute drive from Hamilton CBD
Walk: Allow 90-minutes for a full circuit
Home to an impressive selection of mature trees, Taitua Arboretum features a network of walking tracks linking lakes, woodland gardens, birdlife, and picnic spots. Perfect for a leisurely stroll or family picnic.
Piripiri Cave Walk
37-minute drive from Waitomo
Walk: 10-minute return
A short walk through native bush to a cave entrance with free access. A torch is recommended to descend a staircase into the cave to a viewing platform where visitors can take in the sights.
Marokopa Falls Walk
38-minute drive from Waitomo
Walk to falls: 20-minute return
An easy walk passing through native tawa and nikau forest to reach the 25-metre high Marokopa Falls. Stay behind the barrier as the ground is unsafe to walk over.
Mangapohue Natural Bridge
32-minute drive from Waitomo
Walk: 10-minute return
Follow the boardwalk for an easy stroll to the base of the natural bridge (limestone rock formation). Or you can extend to a 20-minute loop with stunning views and fossils of 25 million-year-old oysters in the limestone outcrops.
Ruakuri Walk
6-minute drive from Waitomo
Walk: 10-minute return
A great, family-friendly walk with small caves for kids to explore in the Ruakuri Scenic Reserve. See stalactites and stalagmites, native birds among the forest, and glowworms.
