Jax loves building, creating and imaginative play – he’s also recently discovered the game Roblox and is currently obsessed. When he’s not inside playing with LEGO or building forts with the kids next door, he’s outside on his bike or practising his forward flips on the trampoline.

What did Jaxon and his family think?

Jax loves a good board game and it’s been a while since we’ve played a new one as a family, so as soon as he saw Risk Junior he wanted to give it a go. He loved the pirate theme, and the bold colourful artwork on the board and on the pirate tokens. The concept of the game was easy to get which meant we could get straight into it and start having fun – no confusing rules to get our heads around.

You can play with 2, 3, or 4 players so my husband and I played with him the first few times so that he could get used to how it works before he plays with friends. It’s a simple idea – you move your pirate ship token around the game board in search of buried treasure as you battle for control of the islands, aiming to collect the most loot to win.

To battle another player to claim an island and its treasure, players put a die in their pirate ship, press the lever, and launch it to discover the next move. Jaxon loved these battles and had so much fun launching the die into the air and seeing what number it landed on. The person with the highest number on the die controls the island and its treasure and the player with the most treasure at the end of the game wins. There were some pretty close calls!

The game requires no reading, is quick to set up, and can be played in less than 30 minutes – we played a few games before bedtime and loved the fact that it wasn’t one of those neverending games that takes ages to play and ends in tears. Because of the simple concept, it’s a game that Jax could easily play with friends so wouldn’t always need a parent to be playing in order to enjoy it. It’s also a great introduction to strategy gameplay and we could see that by the second game he was already thinking a bit more carefully about his moves.

This is a fantastic game to have in the house and one that we will be taking with us when we go away for the school holidays – perfect for rainy days and chilly winter evenings. And definitely better for your child than a digital game on the iPad!
