Grow rock candy crystals

Grow rock candy crystals

Kids will love making their own rock candy. It is a fun and tasty way to grow crystals and see the structure of sugar and how it is made.

What you need:

  • 3 cups sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • Saucepan
  • Glass jar
  • String
  • Pencil

Number of players:

Activity:

Place sugar and water in a saucepan and bring to the boil on the stove.

Stir the solution until all the sugar has dissolved – there should be no sparkly grains left.

Transfer the mixture to a bowl and place it in the fridge to cool down.

Once the sugar mixture has cooled down, pour it into a clean jar.

Tie the string around a pencil and rest this across the jar so that the string dangles into the mixture.

Leave the jar somewhere to set and check it in five days. Over time, crystals will grow and once these have formed, the candy is ready to be consumed!

Notes:

  • The sugar mixture can burn little hands. Only an adult should melt the sugar on the stove.
