Layered bottle density experiment

Layered bottle density experiment

Ever tried to explain quicksand to your kids? Do they notice that when you add honey to a drink, it sinks to the bottom of the glass? Why not share this easy kids science experiment about density with them and create three layers of separating liquids!

What you need:

  • Oil
  • Cork
  • Coin
  • Water
  • One grape
  • Honey
  • Smal clear bottle

Number of players:
1+

Activity:

Take your bottle and pour one third full with honey.

Pour the next third full with oil.

Fill the last third with water. Let the liquids settle before continuing.

When ready, drop in the coin, grape and cork into the bottle.

Watch as the three items settle into different liquid layers. The coin will settle in the honey, the grape in the oil and the cork in the water!
