Science experiment: Fruity ice slush

Making a special treat for the kids while learning science is exciting. Make it more interesting by letting them get involved in the fun. It's even more fun for kids when their experiment is edible.

What you need:

  • mixing bowl
  • ice
  • salt
  • glass
  • fruit juice
  • spoon

Number of players:
1+

Activity:

Fill a mixing bowl with ice cubes.

Sprinkle three tablespoons of salt over the ice cubes and stir it in.

Place a glass in the middle of the ice and then half fill it with fruit juice.

Stir the juice every 10 minutes with a spoon.

Record what happens.

Results:
After 90 minutes the juice will become slushy.

Why?
Because the mixture of the very cold salty ice and water absorbs heat from the fruit juice, which makes the juice get colder and colder.
