Wooden spoon puppets

Wooden spoon puppets

Puppet shows not only encourage imaginative play, they bring out the creative kid hiding inside. Make your own characters or re-create an existing one to perform for family with these great wooden spoon puppets.

What you need:

  • wooden spoon
  • paint
  • paintbrush
  • tape
  • PVA glue
  • items or craft to decorate the spoon: wool, ribbons, fabric, cotton wool, lace, crepe paper, buttons, glitter, aluminium foil, etc.

Number of players:
1+

Activity:

Select a persona for your wooden spoon character: your child may want to make themselves, a dragon, a friend or a hero. Stretch your imagination and choose someone unique.

Paint the wooden spoon a skin colour. If it is a dragon then this colour will be green or purple.

Encourage your child to make the decisions for their wooden spoon character and have them do as much of it as they can.

When paint is dry, glue wool, cotton wool or ribbons on as hair. These items could also be taped in place.

Paint on some eyes or use buttons, googly eyes or any other embellishments you choose and glue them on.

Wrap fabric, ribbon, aluminium foil or crepe paper around the handle for clothing or decoration.

Glue in place.

Notes:

  • Make more than one wooden spoon person for puppets in a puppet show.
  • Choose a character from a well known story, film or book to recreate i.e. Little Red Riding Hood or Peter Pan.
