6 true crime podcasts that have us hooked

Listening to a good podcast has become one of my favourite ways to pass time after the school run or when the kids have gone to bed. If you love tuning in to Bravo’s true crime TV shows then you’ll enjoy devouring episode after episode of these podcasts. Put your detective hat on and get ready to dive into some of my favourite true crime mysteries.

➡️ Not a good one for the kids

My Favourite Murder

If it’s possible to put a comedic twist on true crime, these ladies have mastered it. A staple in the true crime genre, Karen Kilgariff and Georgia Hardstark host an incredible podcast that dives head first into real-life murders (both the big and the small). With a new crime every episode, the ladies chat about the murder, the circumstances surrounding it and so much more in this podcast that has developed a cult following. If a tongue-and-cheek approach to these serious topics isn’t for you, probably one to steer clear from.

 The Teacher’s Pet

I basically stopped everything non-essential in my life to listen to this podcast. Following a crime that happened across the ditch and hosted by The Australian’s Hedley Thomas, this unsolved cold case grips you, angers you and intrigues you all at the same time. Unsolved for 36 years, the podcast looks at the disappearance of Lyn Dawson, a woman who seemingly had a perfect marriage to Aussie footballer Chris Dawson. We meet friends, family and neighbours throughout the episodes and you can’t help but create your own conspiracy theories about what happened to this devoted wife and mother when her husbands strange relationships are unveiled. A great intro to true crime.

The Clearing

My hubby made me listen to this and I was so fascinated by how this story unfolded. The Clearing revolves around a 40 year-old April Balascio who comes to realise that her deceased father, Edward Wayne Edwards, was a murderer. Can you imagine?! We follow her as she recounts how she discovered his secret, hear about the type of man her father was, hear her make a call to the police and listen as she now lives with the knowledge of who her father was.

Wine and Crime

Another comedic take on the true crime genre, this podcast is a little more light-hearted than the others as we join three friends as they chug wine, chat true crime, and unleash their worst Minnesotan accents!

Man in the Window

A recent discovery that I’ve now made so many people listen to, The Man In The Window takes a look at the man who would become the Golden State Killer. After spending decades evading the law, the podcast brings you everything you need to know about the serial killer while asking the bigger questions such why did it take so long for him to be caught? Truly gripping, this is one you definitely need to keep on your radar.

I just got an Alexa gadget for my birthday and this might be something I can to listen to. We watched Mindhunter on Netflix and this is something that I might get hooked into as well.

These sound great by reading the wee blurb about each podcast. I haven’t watched any podcasts I must not be up with the times. I just watch tvnz on demand and YouTube and I’m set. But these really sound good. Right into crime stuff and documentaries I find them super interesting. Will have to look into podcasts tonight now that I’m bored.

These look interesting. I have listened to a couple of podcasts and find it good listening to them in the car. A lot of them are free and a good alternative to music, talkback or the news. The black hands one about the Bain murders is also an interesting one.

I’ve never listened to any podcasts before. I guess this list is a good place to start as there are some interesting looking stories there.
