How to dress like a clown

Dressing up like a clown is easy because the only rule is: there are no rules. However, as a guideline, it should be eclectic, mismatched and completely without logic. You should be able to find enough pieces of clothing in your child’s drawer or dress up box to cobble together a clown outfit.

What you need:

Here is a basic list to get you started. Nothing is essential, it’s all just suggestions:

  • Brightly coloured pyjama pants
  • Brightly coloured long socks
  • Big shoes or boots (adult’s shoes/boots are perfect)
  • Brightly coloured t-shirt or shirt
  • Braces
  • An old tie
  • Large cap or hat
  • Scrunched up newspaper

Activity:

Put the pyjama pants on then pull the long socks up over the pants.

Pack the toes of the big shoes with newspaper and put them on.

Assemble the rest of the outfit accordingly. For best results, allow your child to take the lead – children are much better at being kooky and eclectic. You can tie the tie traditionally or in a big bow around the neck, let your child decide.

For a final touch, you could make your own big paper flower and put it in a button hole or in the hat.
