Jack-o’lantern jars

Got a whole heap of empty jars rattling around under the sink? Why not repurpose them and make these super cute jack-o-‘lantern jars for Halloween this year.

What you need:

  • Empty jar (washed, rinsed with no label)
  • Orange tissue paper
  • Modge Podge (decoupage glue available at craft shops)
  • Scissors
  • Black craft paper
  • Craft glue
  • Paint brush
  • Tealights

Number of players:

Activity:

Measure the height of your jar and cut strips of orange tissue to match the jar’s height. The strips should be about 1.5cm – 2cm wide.

Dilute the Modge Podge with water: 3 parts Modge Podge to 1 part water. Mix it up in a bowl.

Paint a strip of the Modge Podge solution onto the jar and then carefully lay your first strip, vertically onto the outside of the jar.

Do the same all the way around, overlapping the strips to get a nice coverage. Leave it to dry.

Now use the black craft paper to create the jack-o-‘lantern’s eyes, nose and mouth. Use normal craft glue to glue his face onto the jar.

Lastly, finish with another coat of Modge Podge solution all over the outside of the jar, to give it a nice gloss.

Leave it overnight, then when it’s ready, place a tealight inside.  Make a whole selection and put them on your doorstep for Halloween.
