Make a duck caller

Make a duck caller

Imitate the sounds of nature with a simple straw and some vibrating ingenuity. Your kids will be amazed by the sounds they can produce by doing this easy kids’ science experiment.

What you need:

  • Plastic straw
  • Scissors

Number of players:
1+

Activity:

Hold the straw between your index and middle fingers.

Grip the straw with your other hand and draw a short length of the straw through your fingers to flatten it thoroughly.

Repeat until the end of the straw is as flat as you can get it.

Cut the two edges of the flattened end of the straw into a central point.

Slide the pointed end of the straw into your mouth and blow hard into the straw. You should be rewarded with a duck-like call.

For different sounds, cut the straw shorter.

Notes

  • All sounds come from vibrations.
  • The sharp end of the straw is cut into a little triangle which forces the two edges of the point to vibrate quickly which produces the duck-like sound that you hear.
