Rice rainbow

Rice rainbow

It’s a little messy, but when is fun clean?! Here is a craft you can do with the kids using items in your pantry. It’s colourful, fun and pretty – mix the leftovers up together and seal inside a small water bottle as a musical shaker for the little ones.

What you need:

  • uncooked rice
  • Resealable bags
  • food colouring
  • cardboard
  • glue
  • paint brush
  • baking paper
  • tray
  • also helpful – small bowls

Activity:

Step 1. Gather ingredients

Step2. Place some rice in a resealable bag.

Step 3. Squeeze a few drops of food colouring into the bag.

Step 4. Seal the bag, letting the air out as you zip closed.

Step 5. Have your child squeeze and shake the bag to stir up the contents until the food colouring has coloured the rice.

Step 6. Pour into a bowl and leave to dry. Repeat with various other lots in different colours.

Step 7. On your cardboard, use the paintbrush and glue to paint on an arc for the first colour of the rainbow. Sprinkle some rice over the glue.

Step 8. Pour more rice than necessary over the glue.

Step 9. Place the sheet of baking paper over the rice and press in so the rice sticks to the glue.

Step 10. Lift up the cardboard and let the excess rice fall back into the bowl or onto the tray. Shake gently to ensure all loose pieces are removed.

Step 11. Glue again above the first colour.

Step 12. Repeat with the next colour until your rainbow is complete.
