Science experiment: Bug watch

Science experiment: Bug watch

There is something about kids and bugs that just go hand in hand. Find them, watch them and see how they behave under the spotlight.

What you need:

  • large plastic bottle
  • scissors
  • garden soil
  • lamp
  • magnifying glass

Number of players:
1+

Activity:

Cut the top third of a large plastic bottle off.

Take the lid off and put the top part of the bottle upside down inside the bottom part.

Find some garden soil with dead leaves around it.

Fill the top part of the bottle with this soil.

Put the bottle under a lamp and leave for two hours.

You should find that some bugs burrow their way out of the soil and into the bottom part of the bottle. Why? The bugs are trying to get as far away from the heat and the light as they can!
