Operation maths

There is no doubt mathematical operations can be tricky, but try this simple idea to show kids that learning numbers can be  fun and easy! Operation math is a wonderful way to introduce every sign to the kids with cards.

What you need:

  • 2 x Flash cards with numbers 1 – 10
  • Flash cards with math operations ( x + – / )

Number of players:
2+

Activity:

Line one set of numbered flash cards up along the table face up.

Hold one set of flash cards in your hand face down.

Shuffle the cards in your hands and place them in line with the cards on the table, leaving a card width gap.

Randomly choose an operation cardand work out all 10 sums with that operation.

For example:
Lined up on the table are the numbers 10 and 3, 4 and 2, 6 and 8 and so on.
You pull out the + operation. Get the child to work out all sums in addition.

Shuffle one set of numbers and re-place them on the table and move on to the next operation.

At the end of the game, 40 sums should have been finished. If your child correctly answers an agreed amount of sums out of 40, a prize should be given.
