Science experiment: Be a snake charmer

Snake charming is great science for kids. With this fun science experiment you will be a snake charmer in an instant. Have fun with science and craft together with this fun activity for kids.

What you need:

  • plate
  • tissue paper
  • pencil
  • scissors
  • ruler
  • woollen scarf

Number of players:
1+

Activity:

Put a plate on a piece of tissue paper and trace around the plate.

Cut the circle out and draw a spiral inside the circle.

Decorate your soon-to-be snake, drawing the eyes in the middle of the tissue paper.

Cut along the spiral.

Rub a plastic ruler hard against a woollen scarf for 30 seconds.

Immediately touch the head of the snake with the ruler.

Slowly raise your ruler and you should see your snake rise with your ruler and uncoil. Why?

Because the build up of static electricity from the woollen scarf and the ruler transfers to the tissue paper, which is enough to lift it up because the tissue paper is so light.
