Science in the kitchen: Solids to liquids

Learning can happen in many different environments and your kitchen is a good place to start! Teach the kids all about turning solids into liquids, devouring yummy treats as you go.

What you need:

  • 200g dark melting chocolate
  • 50g butter
  • shredded cheese
  • water
  • ice trays
  • pots and pans
  • cups and bowls
  • stove
  • adult supervision

Activity:

Ice: Liquid – solid – liquid.
Fill the ice trays up with water and pop them into the freezer overnight. Once frozen, bring them out and have a chat to the kids about the temperatures that are needed to freeze a liquid to a solid. Pop one ice block into a glass of water and one onto a cloth on the bench. Which one melts faster and why?

While the snacks cook and the information sets in, print out our worksheet for the kids to fill in and see how much they remember.
