Dirt cake

Dirt cake

Serves:

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 packet chocolate cake mix
  • 250g cream cheese, room temperature
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • half a  cup caster sugar
  • 1 packet of Oreo cookies, crushed well
  • 1 bag of Natural Confectionary brand snakes

Materials:

  • 1 medium glazed plant pot
  • 1 bunch of sunflowers or plastic flowers (something with a strong stem)

Method

Preheat oven to 180c Butter the entire inside of the flower pot.

Prepare the cake mix to manufacturer‰s instructions and pour into the prepared pot three quarter full. Be sure not to overfill the pot as there are a few more layers to go on top of the baked cake.

Place the pot on a baking sheet and put in the oven. Bake following the manufacturer‰s instructions if you want a chewy textured cake, bake it a little less than directed.

Remove and allow to cool completely in the pot.

In a large mixing bowl, mix together cream cheese, sour cream and sugar.

Using the back of a spoon, spread the cheese mixture over the top of the cake to a 3cm thickness.

Press the crushed Oreos over the cream cheese layer.

Poke a knife through the top of the Dirt cake where you would like to plant your flowers and then poke each flower into the holes you have made with the knife make sure they are far enough in that they stand straight up.

Scatter a few snakes around the soil and serve with spoons and let everyone dig in!

Notes:

  • You could make one cake per person but you‰ will need to buy smaller pots and adjust the cooking time accordingly. You may also need to use more than one cake mix.
  • You can put the Oreos in the bowl of a food processor to crush down to a fine powder, or put the Oreos in a plastic bag and bash them with the pestle from a mortar and pestle it just depends on how you like to eat your dirt!
  • These have real wow factor! They look gorgeous at parties as you can make quite a few small ones and put them in the centre of the food table.
  • Because your kids will all be eating from the same pot, and fighting for their share of cake, be prepared for some mess!
