What you need:

  • shamrock printable template
  • a bobby pin
  • a green button
  • light green felt
  • dark green felt
  • scissors
  • hot glue gun
  • 2 x A4 pieces of white card stock
  • needle and thread

Print out the shamrock printable template ; cut out one small and one medium shamrock.

Now use the shamrock shapes as a guide to make one small dark green shamrock and one medium lighter-coloured green shamrock.

Lay the small shamrock on top of the larger one. Place the button on top. Sew the button to both layers of felt.

Use a dab of hot glue to attach the shamrock decoration to a bobby pin.

St Patrick’s Day t-shirt headband

Got an old green T-shirt? Repurpose it to make this cute T-shirt headband for St Patrick’s Day. You don’t need a sewing machine – just a needle and thread will do!

What you need:

  • an old green T-shirt
  • circle template (3cm)
  • scissors
  • green button
  • needle and green thread
  • card stock
  • pencil or pen
  • sewing machine (optional)

Cut a strip out of the T-shirt to make the headband. Measure it around your child’s head to get the right size and then secure the ends using the needle and thread, a sewing machine or a stapler.

Using a 3cm diameter circle template, trace four circles in a row onto a piece of cardstock, making sure the sides are touching and the circles are only 3/4 of the full circle shape – so the bottoms of the circles are flat (see video). Cut this shape out; this will be your template.

Place the template on top of a piece of T-shirt material and trace around it with a pencil or pen. Carefully cut out the shape with scissors.

Once you have the row of circles cut out, use a needle and thread to stitch a loose running stitch along the straight edge (see video). Gather the straight edge until it curls around to form a flower or in this case, a shamrock.

Using a large pin, place it onto the headband where you want it to sit. Then place the button on top of the shamrock and sew the two things together at the same time (see video).

Your St Patrick’s Day headband is now ready to wear!

Simple St Patrick’s Day headpiece

St Patrick’s Day is a fun time to give a nod to the Irish. With some green felt and a headband, you can make this simple little headpiece to add just enough luck of the Irish for some school day fun.

Simple St Patrick’s Day headpiece

What you need:

  • green felt
  • wide green headband
  • scissors
  • ruler
  • stapler
  • hot glue gun

You’ll need to cut three strips of felt: two that are 1.5cm wide x 8cm long; and one that is 1.5cm wide x 10cm long.

Fold each strip in half. Staple it on the fold (see video).

Now bend it back the other way into a heart shape (see video).

Using the hot glue gun, stick the bottom edges of each heart together.

Then, with the larger heart in the middle, hot glue the smaller hearts on either side.

Now hot glue the three felt hearts – which should now look like a shamrock – to the headband.
