Kiwi kid company Planet Fun have announced the launch of a new free app and website designed specifically for local kids. The hub is designed to be a safe place for kids to watch TV shows, webisodes, play games, read articles, create avatars, plus check out their favourite toys and more.
With over 7 billion videos on You Tube it’s no wonder that the majority of parents are concerned about inappropriate videos being at the fingertips of their kids. Sadly, safety measures are coming too late, and aren’t fail proof. Couple this with the massive reduction in free to air TV time for kids in New Zealand, and it’s easy to see why Planet Fun are keen to provide a closed entertainment site for kids in New Zealand.
“Someone in the entertainment sphere needed to deliver safe fun to kids in this country!” says Planet Fun CEO and founder, Jeremy Kirk-Smith. “We were witnessing a demise in kids’ free to air TV programming, and we were also reading horror stories about kids accessing You Tube shows that had been dubbed with inappropriate language. No wonder parents refer to You Tube as the digital Wild West! Having been in the kid business for almost 20 years, we have a genuine love of kids in this country and were in a position to help out”.
The Planet Fun site has an impressive level of the entertaining features including the hosts of the site Riggle and Fizz, two seriously cute monsters who give kids a quick how-to guide on exploring the site. There is a weekly “Off the Planet” vlog or short TV show narrated by Walter and Teddy the Dog, of Sticky TV fame. Some of the shows include Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, LOL webisodes, skateboarding videos and toy unboxing. The site feels like you’ve entered a fun galaxy and kids can create their own “monster” avatar, collect virtual coins, play kid friendly games, or explore hours of video. The Off the Planet vlog has weekly art and science activities that kids can try themselves and a weekly toy prize up for grabs.
Obviously, toys are a big part of a kids’ life as well. This is Planet Fun’s core business, and how the site and the production of local shows is funded. “We are in the business of delivering fun, happy experiences to kids. Some of the memories we hold onto the most come from the love of our favourite toys and TV shows” explains Kirk-Smith, “we are increasingly witnessing the blurring of lines between entertainment properties with key kid brands spanning movies, TV shows, webisodes, toys, clothing brands, games and more. It makes sense for us to curate these elements safely for Kiwi kids”. Planet Fun are famous in New Zealand for bringing some of the hottest kid brands to New Zealand such as LOL Surprise, Hatchimals, Paw Patrol, Peppa Pig, Tech Deck, Little Tikes and many, many more. In operation since 2000, many Kiwi parents will have fond memories of Planet Fun toys from the past including Tamagotchi, Teletubbies, Barney, LeapFrog, Cranium and many more.
Planet Fun ensure that every show, game and piece of content on their site is personally vetted and that there are no links out. To keep the site engaging, content is being updated daily and the Off The Planet vlog is uploaded weekly. With research finding that 97% of parents would be likely to encourage their kids to use a fun/safe site made by Kiwis for kiwis, this can only be a good thing for all families.
