How Jaco solved his dinnertime dilemma

Jaco used to dread the late afternoon. He had three kids to wrangle, while preparing a dinner that catered to their fussy tastes. Sound familiar?

A firefighter and dad to three daughters all aged under five, Jaco used to struggle with the whole dinner time routine, from checking the pantry to make sure there was something to cook, to serving something up that the girls would actually eat!

Jaco felt a huge responsibility to not only ensure that he was preparing delicious food the girls would enjoy but that it was nutritious and within his budget and time constraints.

Jaco was also keen to ensure that his daughters were open to try new and exciting foods and his shopping list of needs for his family led, with the responsibility he felt to encourage his girls to be open to trying new food, lead him to become one of HelloFresh’s first New Zealand customers.

Each week, Jaco has the choice to get his girls involved in some or all aspects of the HelloFresh process.

They love being given the option of selecting the following week’s recipes through the HelloFresh app, then when the box arrives it’s like Christmas as they discover both new ingredients and old favourites.

The easy to follow recipes mean the girls can get involved at the preparation stage and Jaco has noticed that the more they are involved, the more they are keen to try their creation.

The girls have also taken to the serious job of repurposing the delivery box!

Making dinnerime a family priority!

Jaco and his wife make is a priority to share family meal times together!  They see it as an opportunity to spend time with their girls and show them the importance of having healthy and varied meals. The HelloFresh meals are all nutritionally balanced and they trust the girls will grow to understand what a well-balanced meal looks like.

The girls – even being fussy eaters – are now more confident in trying new flavours! It’s fair to say, Jaco is feeling pretty proud of his cooking!

Taking the hassle out of meals!

Aside from being able to choose the meals each week, Jaco has also had HelloFresh delivered to their holiday location. He has also switched between the Classic Plan and Family Plan. They haven’t yet tried the Veggie Plan but given that they are enjoying the vegetarian meals (including the ones with tofu!) they get in the other plans, this is definitely on the cards.

During busy times, Jaco also logs in and reduces the number of meals per week or skips a week altogether and if they’re heading away.

My four year old loves getting into the kitchen, and I enjoy teaching him things. It’s fun!

I love the idea of fresh, healthy, easy to prepare meals arriving at my house with clearly laid out steps on how to create them! This would make evening so easy and with miss 15 deciding that she is now a vegetarian it also caters for her!

Loving these ideas and meal boxes for busy households and fussy eaters. My son is a prime example of a fussy eater he will dry reach until he almost throws up if he eats something he don’t want to. We have a busy lifestyle with hubby working and me doing nursing so might just have to look into this more.

I love the idea of these boxes and different meals but I just had a look and a family box is for 4 so what does a family of 5 do? As there would not be enough for us all. I know other family’s who do other boxes and just love it.

That’s awesome if you can afford it 🙂 We are on 1 wage but hubby buys and prepares all the meals (and yes our 6 year old is pretty fussy), but does really well with food. It can be difficult deciding what to have and ensuring you have the right ingredients but this is a great idea 🙂
