How to Start Solids and Put a Smile on Your Baby’s Tum

Promotion for Countdown Smiling Tums

When your baby is approaching six months old, best you start practicing your aeroplane and train noises because it’s time to introduce solid food!

This stage should be a fun and experience for both of you so we have put together a few helpful tips about starting your little one on solids.

Who’s ready?

Most babies make it pretty clear they are keen on some solid food. You might notice your baby is starting to take some interest in what you are eating, copy you opening your mouth as you eat, make chewing movements, and want extra feeds or bigger feeds. These are all signs that the next exciting stage has arrived – eating solid food.

Getting started

Your baby will need to be supported in a slightly reclined seat – a bouncer is ideal. After a milk feed and using a soft spoon offer a small amount of smooth, runny food. Take their lead and over the next few weeks introduce larger portions and more frequently. You will know when they have had enough as they will turn their head away and keep their mouth closed or push the food away.

Start with just one smooth plain food and then introduce a different food every two to four days. To ensure they are nice and smooth push the soft food through a sieve with a spoon, blend, or use an old fashioned mouli. Start with food that is unlikely to cause a reaction such as apple, avocado, banana, pear, carrot, pumpkin and kumara. There is no need to add sugar, salt or any other flavour.

As they get older and more skilled at eating you can introduce a wider variety of food and textures.

Be prepared

While starting solids is an exciting phase, pretty quickly it becomes another part of your busy daily routine. Preparing your baby’s food and ensuring you always have some on hand at home or when you are out and about can require a lot of planning, so having a convenient, healthy go-to is a great option.

We do not purchase baby food as our youngest has been more interested in baby led weaning but we did get a sample of this product with one of our recent countdown online orders and it was a hit in our household 🙂

Not as convinced that another brand of baby food out there is a good idea. I find sometimes this is just another way for people to be more lazy and not prepare solids at home, but of course it helps with mothers who are busy and also for variety.

These look great and easy for when you are planning a trip away or even a big day out, it’s great that their is no added sugars too. I would still only use homemade meals when at home though.

These are such a great, easy way to get things ready for when you are going out. Or even to have a spare in the nappy bag if you get caught out. I have also seen that you can buy reusuable pouches from different shops so that you can put your own homemade baby food into them.

Preparing for baby and yourself is key… or it becomes a stressful mess. Baby likes being comfortable when they eat, same as we do…

These pouches look great! The food sounds so good and healthy I would feed this to my kids if they were little, I also like that they are in resealable pouches!

We made most of ours but if we were going out anywhere it was sometimes just easier to have some supermarket baby food on hand. I used to mouli the food up and either freeze some or keep fresh as it is easy to get a bit out of freezer and heat. Smiling r Tums sounds like the perfect baby food if you can’t do your own for whatever reason. It sounds more natural sweetening with fruits and verges.

I like how this still promotes where possible to make your own baby food. I was never a fan of pre made due to the sugar content and other additives so would spend literally a whole day pureeing mashing preparing various baby foods for our boys.
This product sounds fantastic and great that the packaging is recyclable too.

Great read. Definitely smiling tums sounds like a great brand. Will definitely be recommending to my sister as she is having a baby so its good for her to know what is good these days. I love that it has no sugar also as their baby teeth are coming through ao we really need to do all we can to protect them so this is a great pro to the product.

We used the Only Organic Range of babyfood for our daughter when she started solids, but mainly home made organic food. The pouches are great and super good to take away with you in the baby bag. The Smiling Tums range looks really good, no added sugar is fantastic, what baby needs added sugar???
