Foods babies should avoid

Baby's first foods can cause allergic reactions. Find out what foods you should not feed your baby and find easy baby food recipes that are safe for baby's first solids.

Potential for allergic reaction for babies under 12 months of age

 

  • Cow’s milk
  • Egg whites
  • Citrus fruit
  • Fish and shellfish
  • Nuts and nut butters (such as peanut butter and cashew butter)
  • Salt, sugar or caffeine
  • Honey and unpasteurised dairy products
  • Cow’s milk, goat’s milk and soy milk
  • Biscuits, chocolate and sweets

Choking hazards

  • Popcorn
  • Nuts
  • Peanut butter and other nut butters (if eaten with a spoon or spread thickly)
  • Small, hard candy
  • Grapes
