Five spice chicken

Give your midweek chicken dinner a makeover with a sprinkling of salty five spice. It’s mild enough for the kids to enjoy, yet enough of a diversion from run-of-the-mill roast chook to keep the adults coming back for more.

Roasted ratatouille

This roasted ratatouille is packed full of flavour. Somehow when you bake, rather than cook it in a saucepan, the flavours become more intense and the whole thing much more exciting. This version has some added fill-factor thanks to the chickpeas.

Just like the biscuits your grandma used to make, these are deliciously easy jam drops that the kids will love to make and eat. You will have all of the ingredients in your pantry.

Almond snowballs

These delicious shortbread almond snowballs make a wonderful homemade Christmas gift for friends, colleagues and the kids’ teachers. Just be careful you don’t eat them all first!

Chickpea salad

This nutritious salad takes advantage of in-season grape or cherry tomatoes. Feta, Kalamata olives and fresh herbs add plenty of flavour for a Mediterranean twist.

Everyone loves apple pie and making your own not only fills the house with the wonderful aroma of apples and cinnamon but gives you the chance to take advantage of cook's perks by having the first slice! Serve this old favourite with ice cream or cream.

Peach and mango mash

Mangoes are tropical fruits and therefore not ideal for babies younger than six months, but eight months old is ideal. Introduce it alone for four days to ensure there are no reactions before mixing with other fruits or foods.

Churros

Churros is a golden fritter of choux pastry that's deep fried and eaten hot with a little icing sugar over the top. A Spanish favourite, churros do make a delcious dessert, but they are the ultimate treat to have with a mug of hot chocolate or dipped in a little melted chocolate. Yum!

Rosewater cake

This pretty bake is flavoured with rosewater essence that gives it a wonderful floral flavour with every bite. Topped with rosewater icing and decorated with icing roses, it's a garden masterpiece that's lovely as a weekend treat or as a birthday cake for Grandma.

Char sui fried rice

This authentic fried rice skips the peas and cubed ham goes with more traditional Chinese ingredients such as Char sui pork, which you can find this in your local Chinese barbecue shop.

Breakfast pie

These breakfast pies can be made using regular pantry ingredients that are all affordable. You will just need to add some basil and filo pastry.
